Tanzania is one of the world’s poorest countries and so has limited access to adequate medical facilities. Expats who work or live in Tanzania can get better treatment at Tanzania’s private hospitals, but even they fall short for certain conditions.

It Depends, there are insurance, but some are limited to certain services. Expats working in the public sector are automatically signed up for the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which allows access to public healthcare. Those who work in the private sector can voluntarily sign up for the NHIF if they wish to do so.

As of 2022, Tanzania had a total of 336 hospitals. Among regions, Dar es Salaam had the largest concentration of hospitals, 53 institutions.

Over 60% of Tanzania healthcare facilities are run by the government with the rest being either faith-based or private.

The health financing system in Tanzania is highly fragmented with many sources including general taxation (34%), donor support (36%), out-of-pocket payments (22%), and health insurance contributions (8%)

As of 2020, Tanzania counted a total of 8,458 health facilities. Dispensaries constituted the majority, nearly 7.2 thousand. That same year, there were 369 hospitals and 926 health centers in the country.
