What are the items that I should bring with me because they’re not available (or are too expensive) where I am going?
Nothing, unless it is your favorite consumable. Fresh food is not allowed to be imported without a permit and that is a very time-consuming process.

Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit?
There are a few designer shops. Some local shops cater to those needing special sizes and styles.

What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at?

Where can other household items (such as cleaning materials and home furnishings) be found?
At the shops above. There are also several brilliant furniture outlets. Tanzanians are very good furniture manufacturers and are renowned for Zanzibar beds, chests, bookshelves, side tables, coffee tables and much more. Zanzibar doors are grand entrances for a great deal of houses.

What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city?
There are other shops for fresh produce, but one must be ready to barter for the best price, so most expatriates tend to shop at the mainstream shops and occasionally buy at the odd roadside duka. Other than fresh food, all other commodities are imported and with that comes an inflated cost. You can get most things, including appliances, locally and can find quite a variety, too.
